New Publication in Engineering Weekly

I do not know what to put here, so I am going to type randomly until I feel like I’ve filled enough space.  How does one really know they’ve written enough in a text box?  Well we are about to find out.  My fingers are getting sore, so I am going to stop typing now.  I just needed to create a new Publication post to see how it goes.  So far so good, in my opinion.

New Patent – Inventors: B. Elliott, V. Nguyen

Patent No. US 8,163,204 B2 – A nanoporous polymer electrolyte and methods for making the polymer electrolyte are disclosed. The polymer electrolyte comprises a crosslinked self-assembly of a polymerizable salt surfactant, wherein the crosslinked self-assembly includes nanopores and Wherein the crosslinked self-assembly has a conductivity of at least 1.0><10_6 S/cm at 250 C. The method of making a polymer electrolyte comprises providing a polymerizable salt surfactant. The method further comprises crosslinking the polymerizable salt surfactant to form a nanoporous polymer electrolyte.

New CBD Award – PI: Brian France

The United States Department of Defense (DOD) requires a container for the safe transportation of chemically or biologically contaminated materials, in accordance with DOD, federal and international standards. These materials must be packaged in a manner so that they arrive at their destination in good condition and without presenting a hazard to nearby persons during transport. The packaging requirements include a leak-proof primary and secondary packaging. Large containers are problematic because they must be strong enough endure large pressure differences and capable of withstanding drop and puncture tests without failure. TDA Research, Inc. (TDA) has developed a hazardous waste encapsulating technology that contains hazardous vapors, prevents fluids from leaking, eliminates large voids that can build pressure and adds significant structural strength. This technology is intrinsically capable of packaging different sized items without requiring onsite modification and with minimal weight. This encapsulation technology will make it possible to demonstrate a large hazardous material transfer case. This packaging technology could be applied to other hazardous materials; it has been investigated for the transport and disposal of contaminated building materials produced during biological agent remediation, and would be applicable to both commercial and national security needs.

New USDA Award – Biological Efficacy and Phytotoxicity Optimization of a Novel Oxidant Product for Plant Protection

Floriculture and nursery crops are one of the highest value-per-acre industries in the farm sector.  Like food crops, ornamental crops are infected by many fungal and bacterial pathogens, which result in substantial yield and quality losses.  The environmental horticulture industry is one of the key subsectors of the U.S. agricultural economy, providing an estimated 48,883 permanent and temporary jobs and $27.14 billion in revenue. As part of this industry, floriculture and nursery crops are grown in more than 30 states over a combined 57,500 acres of greenhouses and open space.  To control diseases, growers predominantly use chemical fungicides.  In 2009, 870 thousand pounds of fungicides (22.4% of the total pesticides used) were applied to floriculture and nursery crops.  The potential adverse impacts of these chemicals on the environment and the emergence of fungicide-resistant pathogen strains have put pesticides under increased public scrutiny.  This proposal addresses stakeholder needs by developing a new, environmentally friendly disease control strategy.
